Virtue of the Month

December's Virtue is Hope

December's Virtue is Hope

As we enter into December and the Advent season, it is very appropriate that our virtue for the month is HOPE.  Hope is rooted in the knowledge that God loves us and is always faithful to us, protecting and helping us.  Hope is having a joyful trust in the future, even when we are experiencing difficulty in the present time.  For Christians, the virtue of hope leads us to look forward with confidence to the day when we will live forever with God in heaven.

Our scripture passage that guides us for the month of December comes from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans 5.2-5:

And so we now boast of the hope we have of sharing God’s glory! We also boast of our troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, endurance brings approval, and his approval creates hope.  This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God’s gift to us.

Dear God,

Like the people of old during that first Advent season,

I place my hope in You,

Knowing that you are with me always –

yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever!

When I feel sad or discouraged,

Remind me of Your faithful love

And guide me to use wisely the gifts You have given me

To overcome the challenges of life.

Through my words and actions,

Help me to be a source of hope for others who struggle.

Teach me to live in the Spirit of Jesus,

Whose birth fulfilled the hopes of all people.
